Research:

Civil Engineering profession encompasses broad and interdisciplinary areas of study. Accordingly, our faculty has diverse research interests, which are driven in part by the need to solve current industrial and application oriented problems, and in part by the need to prepare to face the challenges of tomorrow.

Research projects are the key elements of graduate study, and the students are encouraged to join in the ongoing research projects as soon as they begin their education. The curriculum is organized to maximize academic and practical experience to help the students with their research. MS and PhD dissertations, which are mandatory, are expected to lead to publications in internationally well known scientific journals.

The departmental focus in research is on sustainable solutions, hazard mitigation, innovative materials and technologies, and industrial applications. In particular, some of the current topics include:

  • Sediment transport
  • Structural safety and retrofitting
  • Soil dynamics
  • Complex adaptive systems
  • Wave mechanics
  • Water and hazardous waste treatment
  • Geosynthetics
  • Risk analysis
  • Structural health monitoring
  • Fiber reinforced polymers
  • Computational mechanics
  • Stochastic processes
  • Seismic hazard mitigation
  • Groundwater pollution remediation
  • Preservation of historical structures
  • Highway safety
  • Transportation systems
  • Soil improvement techniques
  • Deep foundations
  • Smart materials and structures
  • Recycled materials in pavement design
