The Oriental Pavilion design got the first runner up prize in PreC2OMP 2005

Boğaziçi University student team got the first runner up prize in PreC2OMP 2005 (Prefabricated Concrete Open Meeting Place) in the 18th International Precast Concrete Congress and Exhibition that was organized by BIBM, the International Association of the Precast Concrete Industry, in Amsterdam on 11-14 May 2005. Dutch Precast Concrete Manufacturers Association hosted the Congress in the RAI, and the basic theme of this year’s congress was “Meet the future of precast concrete”. Since students are the future, a student contest under the title of “PreC2OMP” was organized in order to involve the students in the congress. 58 teams from 10 different European countries subscribed to the contest in which students were challenged to design a prefabricated concrete covered open meeting place with a maximum floor area of 15 m2 such as a canopy, a bus shelter or simply a pleasant place to sit in a park. The design and judgment criteria were architectural and structural design, originality, functionality, production feasibility, demountability, safety and finally economy, and the team that involved Rahman SHAHSHENAS, Kıvanç Ahmet AVRENLİ and Tolga TUTAR from Bo?aziçi University, department of civil engineering, was awarded with the first runner prize. Their design, “The Oriental Pavilion”, utilized both modern and traditional approaches through two main aspects: Gothic arches of Ottoman style and triangular laminated windows of modern style, and “The Oriental Pavilion” was ranked the second among all of the submissions to the contest owing to its originality, functionality and economy. Bo?aziçi University team was not only the sole team that subscribed to the contest from Turkey but also the only one that consisted of civil engineering students. All the other teams consisted of students of architecture, mostly seniors. The prizing ceremony was held on 12 May, 2005, in Amsterdam RAI, and all of the winning teams also got free access to the congress and exhibition.
